Article Summary

 

Many individuals  – predominantly women  – work as domestic workers. Indeed, in South Africa alone about a million people  – mainly black women  – are employed as domestic workers. Yet across the world this work is generally undervalued and poorly regulated. As a result, many domestic workers, while employed, cannot be regarded as being engaged in decent work.
